Benefits of Massage
Each stroke style of massage produces a different affect on the body.
Effleurage (gliding) is beneficial in relaxing, stimulation, and promoting blood and lymph movement. Effleurage helps to reduce edema and improves circulation.
Petrissage (kneading) is beneficial in removal of metabolic waste, breaks up adhesions, promotes deep fluid movement, and stretches fascia and muscle. Petrissage helps blood and lymph circulation and rehabilitates weak muscles.
Friction takes blood to the joints, ligaments and tendons, where blood flow tends to be less. Friction warms, stimulates, promotes flexibility and breaks down adhesion.
Tapotement (percussion) promotes muscle tone, stimulates tissue repair, increases circulation and loosen phlegm.
Vibration, when applied lightly, relaxes and when applied vigorously, stimulates.
It is important to drink plenty of water when receiving massage; I suggest 8 ounces before and 8 ounces after massage. Massage stimulates the skin, fascia, ligaments, tendons and underlying muscles allowing increased blood flow releasing toxins into the blood stream. When you are well hydrated the toxins can be washed away easily and your muscles are left relaxed. When toxins are released and you are not well hydrated, you may experience the symptoms of a “cold” or pain throughout your body.
